Cedar Key - post from the past feb 11 2008

We had a fine day an hour and a half North from here on Cedar Key, a little tourist spot out in the gulf. At first I thought it was going to be another walk around ketchy shops and crowded food areas. However, after a few false starts, including one restaurant we walked out of after getting our drinks, we ended at a quiet but elegant place right on the water with wonderful food. We are going back to celebrate Valentine's Day there, although we may not go back right on that day. We could sit in very comfortable chairs and watch the sailboats on the Gulf as families played on the beach. Above us swooped dozens of gulls and Black Skimmers, which are fast becoming another of my favorite birds. Eliz and I ate some shellfish done in different ways and some oyster stew. It was incredible! We did not have entres, just small appetizers. Ron had a salad as he is not a seafood lover. Later, we went to see a fine sunset over the water. I'd like to stay there sometime for a few days. One place had great condominiums with heated pool, workout and spa, and the beach as well as a terrace overlooking the Gulf. Prices were not bad.

Earlier we went to the Park again. This time I saw Lucifer the Hippo being fed. Halves of melon were being tossed in his huge open mouth. We also say a Manatee feeding again. Everytime we go to the Park it is a bit different. The river otters were out of the water, rolling around and looking to be fed. And the foxes were active. Another nice day here. Today we may make the Florida State Fair.
